Description
Growing up Jewish in Montreal, artist Andrea Kalinowski felt much like an outsider in a primarily French-speaking, Catholic city, and, in her creative expressions, she began to explore other women who were themselves similarly displaced. A multimedia collage artist, Kalinowski uses digitized quilt patterns to frame in photos and testimony the true stories of Jewish pioneer women. She gathered stories from archives, university libraries, and historical societies from diaries, letters, and memoirs of these resilient women who were an important part of the pioneer West. Piecing together their histories with many first-person narratives and archival photographs, Kalinowski's quilts of Jewish women are at once an homage to these seldom told stories and a tribute to the sisterhood, community, and comfort that quilts were to pioneers. This catalogue, companion to a traveling exhibition sponsored by the Museum of Fine Arts and organized by the Museum of New Mexico Traveling Exhibitions, features twenty remarkable quilts and histories, all a testament to the women's lives and their contribution to the development of the West. - from Amzon
